Kajiado embraces AI technology in new drive against tuberculosis

Kajiado County has taken a major step in the fight against tuberculosis with the introduction of a portable artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled X-ray machine at Imbirikani Health Centre. The advanced device is expected to serve not only the local facility but also neighbouring health centres across the county, giving residents access to critical diagnostic services at no extra cost.

The machine uses artificial intelligence to analyse chest X-ray images instantly, providing faster and more accurate detection of tuberculosis and other lung-related diseases. Its portability means it can be moved between facilities, allowing more communities to benefit from the service. The development also spares residents the cost and time of travelling long distances to the Kajiado Referral Hospital for similar tests.

Speaking to a local media station, Abdulaziz Samperu, a Medical Officer at Imbirikani Health center, said there are still challenges in diagnosing TB in time. He noted that misdiagnosis remains common and emphasised that the AI-powered X-ray machine has a very high capability of identifying TB through imaging. He added that the technology is expected to play a big role in improving health outcomes, considering tuberculosis remains a disease of major public health concern.

The introduction of the AI-enabled machine is part of a wider national initiative in which Kenya is deploying 80 portable AI-powered X-ray systems to various counties. The project is designed to improve early detection and treatment of tuberculosis, particularly in rural and under served regions where access to diagnostic tools has been limited.

Health experts say the use of AI in medical imaging will support health workers in identifying infections more efficiently and reduce dependence on referral hospitals. It also aligns with national efforts to strengthen primary healthcare and accelerate progress towards universal health coverage.

For residents of Imbirikani and surrounding areas, the new technology represents more than convenience, it brings hope for faster diagnosis, timely treatment, and reduced transmission of tuberculosis. As the machine begins operations, Kajiado joins other counties in embracing innovation to advance public health and ensure that no one is left behind in accessing quality healthcare.
