Mashuuru launches tree planting and clean-up drive under national schools campaign

A tree planting and clean-up exercise was officially launched on October 6, 2025, in Mashuuru Sub-County, Kajiado County, as part of a wider national schools campaign focused on promoting environmental conservation and climate resilience.

The event, themed Turudi Primo Tuka Donate Fruit Trees brought together learners, teachers and residents from public schools across Mashuuru. Participants joined hands in planting fruit tree seedlings and cleaning up school environments and nearby public spaces. The initiative aims to inspire community action toward restoring the environment through tree growing and responsible waste management.

The launch marks Mashuuru’s participation in the national drive leading up to Mazingira Day, which will be observed on October 10. The day, newly designated as Kenya’s Environment Day, focuses on citizen-led environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. The Mashuuru event therefore serves as an early local effort to contribute to the national goal of increased tree cover across schools.

During the exercise, schools within Mashuuru Sub-County became the central points of activity. Learners and staff worked together to plant fruit tree seedlings within school compounds, while others joined residents in collecting litter and clearing overgrown areas. The day’s efforts were directed at creating cleaner and greener learning environments for pupils.

The initiative also emphasizes the importance of fruit trees, which are expected to provide both environmental and nutritional benefits once they mature. Organizers encouraged participants to take care of the seedlings planted today to ensure a lasting impact on the community.

The Mashuuru exercise represents Kajiado County’s contribution to the ongoing national environmental campaign. The county is expected to continue similar activities in the coming days as part of its preparation for Mazingira Day.

The clean-up activity carried out alongside the planting exercise targeted school surroundings and nearby access roads. Participants collected waste, cleared bushes and restored pathways around schools. The effort aimed to promote a culture of cleanliness and responsibility among learners while reinforcing the message of environmental protection.
