Unrest erupts at Nakeel Boys as students stage early morning protests

Chaos broke out at Nakeel Boys High School in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, on Thursday morning after students staged protests that left property destroyed and learning disrupted.

The unrest, which began in the early hours, saw the students vandalize, among other things, the school gate, the principal’s office and the gatekeeper’s house before leaving the school premises for Gataka Road. The learners marched out of the school compound toward Kiserian town, leaving behind a trail of damage and unanswered questions.

Though the cause of the strike has not been officially confirmed, reports from within the school suggest the learners were unhappy with what they termed poor administration. Residents living near the institution said they were jolted from their sleep by the noise of the demonstrations and watched as the students streamed onto the road.

Form Four candidates remain in school to continue preparing for the upcoming Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. The group is expected to sit for the national test in a few weeks, and administrators have moved to ensure their studies are not interrupted.
