Islamic Centre Distributes Relief Food to Vulnerable Households as Drought Worsens in Kajiado

The Manaal Islamic Centre in Kajiado County has stepped in to support vulnerable families as the region faces a worsening drought following the failure of the short rains.

The centre recently distributed food supplies to dozens of families already struggling with dwindling water and pasture resources.

Centre manager Idris Mohamed said pastoralist communities in the county are among the hardest hit, with many now unable to sustain their livestock due to the prolonged dry spell. He warned that the situation could deteriorate rapidly if urgent action is not taken.

“Pastoralist families are already feeling the impact of the failed rains. We are calling on well‑wishers and organisations to join hands in supporting vulnerable households before the situation worsens,” Idris said during the distribution exercise.

Kajiado is among nine counties currently classified under the Alert Phase by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), signalling emerging drought indicators and rising risks to food security.

According to NDMA, the failed short rains have placed several Arid and Semi‑Arid Land (ASAL) counties under increasing stress, prompting the government and humanitarian partners to scale up assistance. The Authority says ongoing food support is being provided across all ASAL regions as part of early response measures.

Community leaders have lauded the initiative saying it is essential in cushioning families as they await the promised government and humanitarian support.

The worst‑affected areas include Kajiado West and Kajiado Central, where residents have reported severe shortages of water and pasture.
