Kajiado County to Partner with Habitat for Humanity Kenya to Address Housing Deficit

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku held a consultative meeting with officials from Habitat for Humanity Kenya to explore a partnership aimed at scaling up the provision of affordable and dignified housing across the county.

The discussion was centred on strategies to accelerate the county’s existing housing programme and ensure housing meets the needs of a rapidly changing society.

The delegation, which included Habitat for Humanity’s Partnerships Manager, Rita Munyae, and Bishop Johnes Ole Meliyio of the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church, recognized the substantial challenge of providing shelter in Kajiado, which faces high population growth.

Lenku underscored the government’s commitment to the housing sector, referencing it as a basic human entitlement. “The conversation centred on the ongoing housing programme in several counties, including in Kajiado, and how we can partner to ensure the majority of our people get decent housing, in line with the trends of a rapidly changing society,” Governor Lenku stated.

The meeting acknowledged the existing positive relationship between the organization and the community with the Governor specifically citing the success of a past collaboration between Habitat for Humanity and the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church, which led to the construction of an Early Childhood Development (ECD) complex a project which was successfully integrated with a water project designed to boost sanitation and hygiene standards within the local community.

The Kajiado county leadership is now focused on leveraging the expertise and resources of the organization to tackle the housing deficit and ensure the construction of safe and permanent homes for its residents.
