Court halts land validation exercise in Purko Ward

A Kajiado Magistrate’s Court has stepped in to suspend a planned land validation exercise in Purko Ward, signaling growing concern over how land processes are conducted in the area. On November 11, 2025, Principal Magistrate Jane Kamau issued a conservatory order preventing the County Department of Lands from holding a public participation forum until after a by-election for the ward’s Member of County Assembly (MCA).

The move followed a petition by Purko resident Dickson Letema Koinanke, who argued that the timing of the forum was inappropriate and could create confusion among residents regarding land ownership. Reports indicate that Koinanke maintained the exercise lacked genuine public engagement and should be deferred until the community had clear representation.

Purko Ward has a long history of land disputes. In April 2024, the High Court, in the Miyano v Kajiado and Others case, ordered a resurvey of disputed parcels within Purko. The court found that boundaries between registered plots were unclear and required correction, highlighting ongoing issues with land mapping in the area.

In October 2025, the Environment and Land Court, in Saidimu v Statutory Manager & Others, ruled on another Purko parcel. The court declared a previous title transfer irregular and restored ownership to the rightful owner. It also issued a permanent injunction to prevent further interference with the land, emphasizing the importance of respecting established ownership rights.

Purko’s land disputes are not limited to individual plots. There have been ongoing boundary disagreements between Purko and neighboring areas, including Matapato. The county government has acknowledged the issue and promised proper surveys and mapping to resolve contested boundaries.

The suspension of the public participation forum highlights how sensitive land matters are in Purko. Validation and titling exercises are essential to clarify ownership, but residents remain cautious about processes that could affect their property rights. The court has set  December 8, 2025 for a full hearing to decide the future of the land validation exercise.
