The Managing Director of Oloolaiser Water and Sewerage Company (Olwasco), Gladys Marima, has raised alarm over rampant illegal water connections, warning that the practice is draining the utility’s resources and endangering service delivery.
Speaking during the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Oloolaiser Water Plaza, Marima said rogue customers and leaking pipes have contributed to non-revenue water losses of 48 percent of the total volume supplied.
“Illegal connections are a major concern. Nearly half of the water we produce is lost to theft and leakages. This is unsustainable, and we must act firmly to protect our systems,” she told shareholders.

Speaking exclusively to the Metropolitan Shopper, Marima explained that while the company has expanded its coverage, illegal connections continue to undermine progress. She warned that drastic measures will be taken against perpetrators once identified.
“We are putting in place mechanisms to minimize non-revenue water. Those found guilty of illegal connections will face serious consequences,” she added.
For the 2024/25 financial year, Oloolaiser recorded improved water coverage of 54.32 per cent, up from 51 per cent in 2023/24. However, water sales volumes dropped to 939 cubic meters, a decline largely attributed to the presence of illegal connections.

Marima emphasized that the company remains committed to expanding access while safeguarding its infrastructure. She urged residents to cooperate with the utility and report suspicious activities to ensure a reliable water supply.
However, in a bid to streamline its operation, Olwasco has introduced automated meter reading and automated billing, which is sent to customers via Email and SMS
Marima called for stronger community vigilance and stricter enforcement to curb the growing menace of illegal water connections.
