Kitengela Hospital Gets Second Surgical Theatre in Major County Health Upgrade

Expectant mothers in Kitengela will now access safer and faster maternity services following the unveiling of a state-of-the-art operating theatre at Kitengela Sub-County Hospital, a move hailed as a game-changer for maternal and emergency care in the region.

The second modern facility was commissioned by Kajiado County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Health Alex Kilowua, who said that the theatre will ease congestion and reduce referrals to the Kajiado County Referral Hospital, where patients previously had to travel for surgical procedures.

“This marks a major step in our efforts to expand maternal health services and ensure timely access to emergency surgical care,” Kilowua told journalists during the launch. He noted that the project was implemented in partnership with the National Government through the National Equipment Support Programme, which has played a key role in modern medical infrastructure.

“Through strategic partnerships and investment in modern equipment, we are working to ensure that every mother can access safe and dignified delivery services without having to travel long distances,” Kilowua added.

Earlier this year, the county signed a partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to establish a Specialised Medical Centre at Kitengela, focused on maternal and newborn health.

The hospital’s Medical Officer in Charge, Dr Veronica Abuto, welcomed the new theatre, saying it will ease pressure on the existing facility and improve response to emergency cases. “Handling emergencies has been challenging due to reliance on a single theatre. This new unit will enhance our capacity and significantly reduce risks for mothers and newborns,” she said.

Dr Abuto also revealed that the hospital has witnessed a steady rise in maternity cases, with over 70 births recorded in a single day, underscoring the urgent need for expanded services. “This facility is essential in improving service delivery and cutting the cost of referrals,” she added.

Residents and health workers praised the development, calling it a lifesaving intervention for families in Kitengela and surrounding areas. They said the theatre will make quality maternity services more accessible, reduce delays in emergency care, and improve overall healthcare delivery in Kajiado County.

The county government has pledged to continue investing in health infrastructure, staffing, and equipment to meet growing demand and ensure that patients receive timely, safe, and dignified medical services.
