DCI recommends murder charges over Kitengela lounge shooting

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recommended murder charges against five people over a fatal shooting at C&M Lounge in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

In a press statement dated February 24, 2026, and signed by J.K. Marete on behalf of the Director of Criminal Investigations, the agency said the investigation file had been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Kajiado for review and further action.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of January 25, 2026. According to the DCI, a team of investigators led by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) in Isinya, working with crime scene experts, visited and secured the scene shortly after the incident.

Investigators documented the scene and recovered key exhibits, including spent cartridges, which were preserved for forensic analysis. On January 26, experts from the National Forensic Laboratory conducted a detailed examination involving ballistics, imaging and acoustics and other crime scene analysis.

The DCI said additional evidence was collected, including a review and analysis of available CCTV footage. Three firearms surrendered by individuals under investigation were also submitted for ballistic examination and the forensic report was received by the investigating team. A total of 11 individuals recorded statements as part of the inquiry.

Upon completion of investigations, the SCCIO Isinya forwarded the duplicate investigation file, together with a comprehensive brief and recommendations, to the ODPP on February 2.

The inquiry recommended that five suspects be charged with murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code, and with attempted murder contrary to Section 220 of the Penal Code.

The charges relate to the death of Kevin Shepashina Maseli and the attempted murder of Joseph Kasio, who was admitted in hospital at the time.

The DCI said it is awaiting guidance from the ODPP and will take necessary action in line with the advice received, adding that it remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability through due process.
