The County Government of Kajiado today officially handed over the Olekasasi grounds for the construction of an Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market, marking a major milestone in efforts to improve trade infrastructure in Ongata Rongai.
The handover was led by county officials together with Leah Marias, the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Trade, Investment and Enterprise Development, in collaboration with the State Department for Housing and Urban Development (Urban Planning). The event was also witnessed by Ongata Rongai Member of County Assembly (MCA) Titus Matheka.
The Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) is a national government initiative aimed at boosting local economies through targeted public investments. Under the programme, modern markets are being developed across the country to support small-scale traders and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing organised, safe and serviced trading spaces.

Olekasasi was identified due to its rapid population growth and high commercial activity. Many traders in the area have been operating in congested and informal spaces, creating challenges in order, hygiene and accessibility. The new market is expected to help decongest the town while improving trading conditions.
Once completed, the ESP Market is expected to include permanent stalls, designated sections for different categories of goods, sanitation facilities, water supply, proper drainage and improved lighting. The design follows standards set by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development to promote safety and orderly urban development.
The project is expected to create jobs during construction and later through market operations. By formalizing trade, the county also anticipates increased revenue and improved service delivery.
County officials said the handover clears the way for construction works to begin, demonstrating continued cooperation between the national and county governments in delivering development projects at the grassroots.
The ESP Market is expected to significantly boost livelihoods for traders in Olekasasi and the wider Ongata Rongai area in Kajiado County.
