Wave of mob violence and crime hits Kajiado County

Kajiado County has witnessed a series of violent incidents, including mob attacks and armed robberies, raising concerns over public safety.

In Kajiado Town, a 30-year old man, Boniface Mutuku, collapsed and died while in police custody after being attacked by a mob who accused him of cattle theft. Mutuku was rescued and taken to the local hospital on January 12. After being discharged, he was placed in police custody but later developed complications and was rushed back to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy. Police said the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been notified to investigate the death.

In Kitengela, a man was lynched by a mob over claims that he had stolen a mobile phone. The victim’s body was later taken to the mortuary pending identification and autopsy, while police continue investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, in Loitoktok, a rider was shot and wounded during a robbery in which his motorcycle was stolen. The man was admitted to hospital with a bullet wound in the spine, while the attackers remain at large. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, which also occurred on January 12.

Security officers in the county have reported a worrying trend of mob violence, noting that more than five lynching incidents were reported in a single day. Authorities have called for increased vigilance and community cooperation to curb such attacks.
