Kajiado Faces Drought Risk Despite Brief Early December Showers, Met Department Warns

Kajiado County residents should brace for prolonged dry spells and below-average rainfall for the remainder of the October-December short rains season, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), despite a forecast of isolated showers and rain expected between Tuesday, December 2, and Saturday, December 6.

The short-lived early December showers are unlikely to alleviate the overall dry conditions predicted for the county with KMD’s long-term seasonal outlook projecting Kajiado to receive near-average to below-average rainfall for the entire period, characterized by poor distribution in time and space, with high probability of prolonged dry spells.

The forecast is heavily influenced by the developing La Niña phenomenon, which typically leads to drier-than-average conditions across East Africa, a pattern confirmed by a 60% chance of La Niña developing during this crucial October-December 2025 season.

Temperatures across the county are also anticipated to be warmer than average, further worsening the moisture stress on pastures and water sources.

Authorities have been strongly urged to actively monitor weather updates and implement appropriate measures to manage potential drought conditions, protect livelihoods, and build community resilience against rainfall variability.

Other parts which shall receive rainfall in the coming days include Nairobi and Machakos counties, which are also part of the Highlands East and the South-Eastern Lowlands regions expected to experience showers and thunderstorms during the first week of December.

Residents in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley: Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, are forecast to experience cloudy mornings with sunny intervals before the arrival of afternoon showers.

Similarly, other counties within the South-Eastern Lowlands, specifically Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, and Taita Taveta, along with inland parts of Tana River County, are also predicted to have a chance of experiencing morning and afternoon showers during this period.
