WITIA, Rotary Club of Karen Unveil Ksh4.7M Smart Library at Nkaimurunya School

Over 2,000 learners from Gataka in Kajiado North Subcounty are set to benefit from a transformative digital learning space following the launch of the Nkaimurunya Comprehensive School Smart Library, a pioneering initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide in underserved communities.

The Sh4.7 million facility, officially unveiled at Nkaimurunya School, is the first of its kind in the region. It features 64 high-speed computers, internet connectivity, and curriculum-aligned educational software, offering learners from low-income backgrounds access to modern technology and digital literacy tools.

The project is spearheaded by Women in Technology and Innovation Africa (WITIA) in partnership with the Rotary Club of Karen, under WITIA’s flagship program, Smart Libraries for a Smart Nation. The initiative is designed to support research, innovation, and technological literacy in public schools, with plans to scale to other underserved institutions across Kenya.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos, hailed the initiative as a milestone in Kenya’s digital transformation agenda. “This Smart Library is a tangible expression of Kenya’s commitment to inclusive, technology-driven education. The Ministry of Education fully supports community-led partnerships that ensure no child is left behind in the digital era,” he said.

ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui, described the project as a national model. “What WITIA has done here is a demonstration of how innovation, partnership, and purpose can transform public education,” he noted.

WITIA Chairperson and Founder Eunice Pohlmann emphasized the importance of equal access to digital tools. “The Smart Library is more than a room with computers, it’s a gateway to equal opportunity. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves the digital tools that define the future,” she said. Pohlmann confirmed that the pilot will be replicated in other schools to expand its impact.

The launch also saw the signing of two key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), one between WITIA and the Rotary Club of Karen to deepen collaboration in education and digital literacy, and another with UNICAF to offer scholarships in technology, leadership, and innovation for WITIA members and affiliates.

Local leaders praised the development. Nkaimurunya MCA James Maina called it a “historic first,” noting that schools in informal settlements can lead in innovation when stakeholders unite. The school’s Headteacher expressed gratitude to WITIA and its partners, saying the facility will revolutionize learning and open new horizons for the community.

Students at Nkaimurunya School were visibly excited, describing the shift from theory-based computer lessons to hands-on learning as life-changing. “Before this, we only learned about computers from textbooks. Now we can touch, explore, and understand them better. It feels like our future just got brighter,” said one student during the ceremony.

The Smart Library will also serve as a safe after-school hub for pupils and community members, offering structured learning and digital access beyond classroom hours. Teachers have received training in digital literacy and content moderation, ensuring responsible and effective use of the facility.

Rotary Club of Karen President Linet Ayuko said the project reflects Rotary’s commitment to literacy and community empowerment, while Global Exhibition Hub Country Director Edwin Masivo praised WITIA’s leadership in driving technology-based education.

The Nkaimurunya Smart Library is expected to serve as a model for Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting equitable, tech-enabled education for all.
