Low Turnout as IEBC Targets 3,800 New Voters in Kajiado North

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is racing against time to register at least 3,846 new voters in Kajiado North Sub-county, but current figures show a slow start, with only 826 registrations recorded so far

The ongoing continuous voter registration exercise, which began on September 29, 2025, is part of IEBC’s constitutional mandate to ensure that every eligible Kenyan above 18 years has the opportunity to participate in future elections. However, logistical constraints and low public turnout are threatening to derail the target.

According to Benard Musee, the Sub-County IEBC Registration Officer, the exercise is currently centralized at the Ngong IEBC office, despite the existence of 35 designated registration centers across Kajiado North. Musee cited limited resources as the reason for not activating all centers, noting that this has affected accessibility and reach.

“We are doing our best with what we have. The process is slow, but we’re seeing encouraging signs as 99.9% of those registering are youth,” Musee told journalists during a media briefing.

He urged all unregistered but eligible citizens to take advantage of the exercise, emphasizing that the requirements are straightforward: one must be a Kenyan citizen and present an original national ID or valid passport to register.

Musee clarified that while the registration kit in Ngong can enroll any Kenyan citizen to vote anywhere in the country, it cannot facilitate transfers between constituencies. “If you want to transfer your voting location, you must visit the IEBC office in the constituency where you wish to vote,” he explained.

To boost awareness and mobilize participation, IEBC has partnered with youth groups, opinion leaders, and the Ministry of Interior, leveraging social media platforms and community networks to reach potential voters.

The registration exercise runs Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and is open to all qualified citizens. Musee emphasized that registering to vote is not just a civic duty but a strategic move toward shaping leadership and governance

IEBC officials remain hopeful that increased awareness and community engagement will help close the gap and meet the target.
