Leaders move to restore calm in Elerai after deadly Rombo–Taveta land clashes

Tension remains high in Elerai, Rombo, following renewed clashes between two neighbouring communities along the Kajiado–Taita Taveta border that left several people injured and homes destroyed.

Kajiado South Member of Parliament (MP), Sakimba Parashina, visited the affected area to assess the situation and listen to the grievances of residents. He assured the local communities that the government is fully committed to restoring peace and ensuring lasting stability in the region.

“I assured them that the government remains vigilant and is fully committed day and night to maintaining peace and stability, in order to prevent any further escalation, such as what occurred yesterday,” Parashina stated.

He emphasized that the ongoing border dispute will be resolved through dialogue, noting that a framework for addressing the matter already exists. The agreement, signed by the former Governor of Taita Taveta County, Granton Samboja, and the Governor of Kajiado, Joseph Ole Lenku, provides a structured approach for handling the boundary issue.

“We will revisit this agreement to ensure that residents on both sides can live in harmony, free from conflict. Updates will continue to be shared as peace talks progress. Let us all remain calm, united and steadfast in our commitment to peace,” the MP urged.

To address the escalating situation, top-level discussions were held earlier today involving the Kajiado South MP, Sakimba Parashina, Taveta MP Bwire, MCA Rombo Ward Angaine Jackson and 15 community representatives drawn from both Taveta and Rombo. The multi-stakeholder security meeting aimed to calm tensions and restore order along the volatile border.

Local leaders and security agencies have pledged to maintain close coordination to prevent further violence while pursuing a lasting solution to the boundary dispute. Residents have been urged to remain peaceful as authorities work to implement the agreed framework and rebuild trust between the two communities.
