Kajiado Teachers Champion Mental Health Wellness Through Sports Gala

Hundreds of teachers from across Kajiado County gathered at Mashuuru Comprehensive School, in  Sultan Hamud for a vibrant sports gala aimed at promoting mental wellness, physical fitness, and professional camaraderie among educators.

The event, held under the theme of teacher well-being, drew enthusiastic participation and served as a timely intervention amid growing concerns over burnout and stress in the teaching profession. Organized as a break from the demanding routines of classroom life, the sports day featured competitive and recreational activities including football, volleyball, netball, and athletics.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kajiado County Chair Elly Korinko led the event and emphasized the urgent need to prioritize teacher wellness. “Many of our teachers are silently battling mental health challenges due to heavy workloads, financial strain, and toxic work environments,” Korinko said. “This sports day is not just about fun  but also it’s about healing, fitness, and reminding our teachers that their well-being matters.”

Korinko also noted that most teachers rarely get time to engage in physical activity, with only a few participating in school-based sports through coaching roles. He called for more structured wellness programs to be integrated into the county’s education calendar.

Teachers and organizers echoed his sentiments, describing the profession as emotionally demanding and in need of regular wellness interventions.

The event also fostered cross-subcounty unity, with educators from both rural and urban schools mingling, exchanging ideas, and building lasting bonds.

“The energy here is incredible,” said a teacher from Kajiado West. “We need more of this, not just for fun, but for our mental health and motivation.”

Female teachers were especially encouraged to participate, with organizers emphasizing inclusivity in all activities.
