Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitengela, Kajiado County, took on a deeply emotional tone this year as residents and leaders used the national holiday to honour the late Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a fallen hero whose legacy shaped Kenya’s democratic journey and uplifted the Maa community.
Led by Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, the event began with the traditional inspection of the guard of honour, but quickly shifted into a spontaneous tribute. “Today, we remember not just the heroes of our past, but one of the greatest liberators of our time, Raila Odinga,” Lenku said, drawing cheers and solemn chants from the crowd.

Residents shared personal memories of Odinga’s visits to Kajiado and his vocal support for land rights, devolution, and social justice. Many described him as a leader who stood with the marginalized and fought for equity across the country. “He was a true nationalist. He spoke for us when no one else would,” said one elder from Ngong.
The ceremony became a space for reflection and unity, with speakers from various wards praising Odinga’s role in mentoring local leaders and defending the dignity of the Maasai people.
