Kajiado Assembly Probes Street Light Failures, Allocates Sh18 Million to Restore Safety

A report tabled before the Kajiado County Assembly has revealed that many street lights across the county are non-functional due to unpaid electricity bills, raising serious public safety concerns and exposing residents to increased risk of crime.

The findings, presented by the Sectoral Committee on Roads, Public Works, Transport, and Energy, highlighted that traders and commuters have been operating in darkness, especially in high-traffic areas where faulty or inactive street lights have become a security hazard. Recent muggings reported in poorly lit zones have intensified calls for urgent intervention.

In response, the County Assembly has allocated Sh18 million annually to cover electricity costs and ensure consistent lighting across all public spaces. The move is expected to bring relief to thousands of residents and business owners who have long complained of insecurity linked to dark streets.

The Assembly has also directed the County Treasury to explain the historical non-payment of electricity bills and to develop a sustainable plan to keep all street lights operational. Oversight of the implementation will be strengthened through the Department of Public Works.
