Rongai Residents Raise Alarm as Gravity-Kandisi Road Becomes Mugging Hotspot

Residents of Ongata Rongai are sounding the alarm over rising insecurity along the Gravity-Kandisi Road, which has now emerged as a hotspot for muggings and phone snatching often done in broad daylight.

Locals say the attacks are most frequent during early morning hours when commuters are heading to work or school.

The surge in theft has sparked widespread concern across the greater Rongai area, with residents reporting increased cases of burglary, street muggings, and petty theft. Many have taken to social media to express frustration over what they describe as police inaction and a growing sense of lawlessness. “Rongai yote imekuwa wizi,” one resident posted. “Something needs to be done.”

In one viral post, Reuben Omare, a resident of Ongata Rongai, described rampant theft in Tuala, where even household items like sufurias and chickens are stolen and sold to scrap dealers. He noted that the local police station, which serves Metro, Ngurunga, and Solinke, lacks a patrol vehicle, forcing the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to rely on a community-donated motorcycle.

Another resident lamented that despite Ongata Rongai Police Station being one of the most staffed in the county, officers rarely respond to crime reports. “Burglary and muggings are everywhere. It’s sad and frustrating.”

The growing insecurity has disrupted daily life, with many residents now fearful of walking alone or carrying phones in public. Community leaders are calling for urgent intervention, including increased patrols, better resourcing of local police stations, and accountability from law enforcement agencies. Residents say they are prepared to escalate their concerns if authorities fail to act.
