Kajiado records at least 13 maternal deaths in just three months

Kajiado County has reported 13 maternal deaths in the last three months, raising serious concern among health officials and local leaders.

County health data shows that seven of the deaths were linked to excessive bleeding. Most of these cases occurred during home births without skilled medical assistance, leaving mothers vulnerable to preventable complications.

The statistics have prompted renewed calls for stronger interventions in maternal health. Local leaders and health experts say urgent steps are needed to expand access to medical care, especially in remote villages.

During a public sensitization forum on safe childbirth in Loitokitok, organized by the Kajiado County government in partnership with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), participants highlighted poor access to health facilities as one of the biggest challenges. Many mothers continue to rely on traditional birth attendants, particularly in areas far from hospitals.

Another concern raised during the discussions was the limited inclusion of men in reproductive health programs. Stakeholders noted that men are often left out of maternal health initiatives, weakening efforts to ensure safer pregnancies and deliveries. Experts stressed that when men are involved in decision-making about maternal care, outcomes for expectant mothers can greatly improve.

Kajiado County Health  CECM Alex Kilowua announced that the department is planning to deploy standby ambulances in remote areas. He explained that the move is aimed at helping expectant mothers reach hospitals on time and reducing preventable maternal deaths.

Health officials are urging expectant mothers to seek skilled care and deliver in hospitals. They say doing so remains the most effective way to curb the rising number of maternal fatalities in the county.
