A major police operation in Kitengela has led to the arrest of 30 individuals and the seizure of illegal alcohol and bhang, following mounting pressure from residents over rampant insecurity and public health risks.
The crackdown targeted notorious brewing hotspots in Noonkopir and Kyang’ombe estates, where chang’aa, kang’ara, and bhang were reportedly being sold openly from as early as 6 a.m. Some outlets operated under the guise of hardware shops or converted homes, drawing concern over their proximity to schools and residential areas.
“We’ve been living in fear. These dens attract criminals and addicts, and the noise and fights are constant,” said one resident.
Police recovered dozens of litres of illicit brew and rolls of bhang during the raid. However, locals remain skeptical about the sustainability of the crackdown, alleging that some officers have previously collected protection fees from the very dens now being dismantled.

“This is a good start, but we want consistency. Not just a show for the cameras,” said another resident.
Kajiado County police officials have promised continued surveillance and community engagement, but residents are demanding accountability and transparency in future enforcement efforts.
The operation comes amid growing calls for tighter regulation of informal alcohol outlets and a review of licensing loopholes that allow such dens to flourish unchecked.
