Kajiado Main Prison gets first beds under new ‘Adopt a Decker’ initiative

Kajiado Main Prison has become the first facility in the country to benefit from the new He for He Adopt a Decker initiative. The program aims to provide at least 20,000 modern beds to prisons across Kenya, easing congestion and improving the living conditions of inmates.

The prison, which holds both male and female inmates, has welcomed the move as a major step toward better rehabilitation. Officials say that providing beds is not only about comfort but also about restoring dignity to prisoners, as required under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

Speaking during the launch, the Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department of Correctional Services, Dr. Salome Beacco, said the program is being supported by well-wishers and partners. She explained that the initiative will play an important role in justice administration and help prisoners reintegrate into society after serving their terms.

Dr. Beacco noted that Kenyan prisons face a shortage of more than 18,500 beds. She called on individuals, companies and organizations to step forward and support the campaign, saying every contribution makes a difference in improving the correctional system.

The Adopt a Decker project is part of wider efforts to make prisons more humane and effective in reforming inmates. For Kajiado Main Prison, being the first beneficiary has set the pace for other facilities that are expected to follow.
